How to prevent or ameliorate informative inefficiencies in capital markets that result in an improper price formation? Specifically, how to avoid the possibility of public companies or stockbrokers lying or not providing relevant information to the market? What role do market self-regulation and government regulation play in this context? The article strives to answer these questions by analyzing the diverse available remedies - by reviewing the abundant specific American doctrine - and finally proposing an intermediate solution, combining market self-regulation with government regulation (by also denouncing the inexistence of "perfect models", that ignore the agent's liberty). The preventive contribution of (civil and criminal) sanctions is especially reviewed, offering a cost-benefit analysis, typical of classic models of law and economics theory

Mare nostrum e «Geopolitica». Il mito imperiale dei geografi italiani

    Get PDF
The article provides a critical history of the Italian geopolitical history of the fascist period and especially its journal «Geopolitica» (1939-1942). The discourse is situated amidst the wider contexts of the interwar debates surrounding geopolitics and during the Second World War. Similarly, the movement is positioned within the political, academic and cultural contexts of fascist Italy and the cultures of Italian geography in this era. It considers the origins and development of geopolitical ideas and the regime’s promotion of an Italian geographical imagination and its consequent support for «Geopolitica», its program and its representations of colonial space in Africa and its analysis of the Mediterranean and Balkan regions

Comparative Analysis of Bearings for Micro-GT: An Innovative Arrangement

    Get PDF
Microgas turbines are a widespread technology in cogenerative and propulsion applications. Bearings are a key factor in their design and development. The aim of the present research work is the development of the support system for a typical microturbine intended for power generation. To this goal, the present chapter defines the typical requirements of the machine and, afterward, describes the different technologies available to develop the support system of a reliable microturbine. Conventional (rolling element and oil-film) supports and cutting-edge (magnetic, aerodynamic, and aerostatic) bearings are reviewed. Particularly, their suitability to the operating conditions is compared by means of a literature review and elaboration of the relevant data. By analyzing all this information, a new concept for the design of a micro-GT support system is devised. Instead of using a single type of bearing as usual, the new system includes different types in order to take advantage of the best characteristics of each one and, simultaneously, to minimize the effects of the relevant flaws. The innovative support system requires a suitable bearing arrangement, which is compared with the conventional ones. The conceptual design of the innovation is completed by a discussion of its advantages, drawbacks, and prospective improvements

COX-1 Inhibitors: Beyond Structure Toward Therapy

    Get PDF
Biosynthesis of prostaglandins from arachidonic acid (AA) is catalyzed by cyclooxygenase (COX), which exists as COX-1 and COX-2. AA is in turn released from the cell membrane upon neopathological stimuli. COX inhibitors interfere in this catalytic and disease onset process. The recent prominent discovery involvements of COX-1 are mainly in cancer and inflammation. Five classes of COX-1 inhibitors are known up to now and this classification is based on chemical features of both synthetic compounds and substances from natural sources. Physicochemical interactions identification between such molecules and COX-1 active site was achieved through X-ray, mutagenesis experiments, specific assays and docking investigations, as well as through a pharmacometric predictive model building. All these insights allowed the design of new highly selective COX-1 inhibitors to be tested into those disease models in which COX-1 is involved. Particularly, COX-1 is expressed at high levels in the early to advanced stages of human epithelial ovarian cancer, and it also seems to play a pivotal role in cancer progression. The refinement of COX-1 selective inhibitor structure has progressed to the stage that some of the inhibitors described in this review could be considered as promising active principle ingredients of drugs and hence part of specific therapeutic protocols. This review aims to outline achievements, in the last 5 years, dealing with the identification of highly selective synthetic and from plant extracts COX-1 inhibitors and their theranostic use in neuroinflammation and ovarian cancer. Their gastrotoxic effect is also discussed

Investigation of collimating and focusing lenses impact on laser diode stack beam parameter product

    Get PDF
The paper presents a new expression for determining the beam parameter product of a multi-emitter laser diode module made by stacking several single emitter chips. The proposed formula takes into account the effect of collimating and focusing lenses and has been validated experimentally, obtaining excellent agreement between theoretical expectations and measurements. A practical application to optimize the lenses’ configuration for the design of a fiber-coupled multi-emitter module is also reported

ABSTRACT: While many institutional activities of Church bodies fall within the scope of the recent reform of Italian law on non-profit organizations ("NPOs"), the specific features of Church bodies prevent from a straightforward application of the new regime. Therefore, the Code for the Third Sector and the Act on Social Enterprises allow Church bodies to access the tax exemptions and the other benefits provided to NPOs as far as they comply with a set of conditions aimed at bridging the differences between Church bodies and secular NPOs. The paper (1) discusses in details these conditions, (2) offers a critical evaluation of costs, risks, and opportunities related to the new regime, and (3) suggests possible organizational structures to comply with the current system
